Health Fair Open to the Public at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness, November 13, 2007
Flu Shots Only $12
Prior Lake, Minnesota -
As part of the celebration of its 13-year anniversary, Dakotah! Sport and
Fitness will sponsor a Health Fair open to the general public from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 13, 2007. Dakotah! Sport and Fitness, which opened their doors on November 14, 1994, is
owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.
While the Health Fair targets Community members, Native Americans who live in Scott County,
SMSC staff, SMSC Gaming Enterprise team members, members of Dakotah! Sport and Fitness, and
their families, the public is also invited to attend.
"One of the highlights of the Health Fair is that flu shots will be available for only $12. Flu shots
typically cost anywhere from $24 to $30," said DSF Assistant Director Renee Engeman who is
coordinating the event.
"We wanted to provide low cost flu shots so that they would be more accessible to those who need
them," said SMSC Health Administrator James Lien. "This is part of the Shakopee Mdewakanton
Community's commitment to health."
Nurses from the SMSC Health Department will administer the flu shots at a cost of $12 for health
fair participants and free to SMSC employees and team members.
Staff from various SMSC Departments will conduct the free health screenings. Dentists from the
Shakopee Dakota Dental Clinic will conduct oral cancer screenings. There will be spinal screenings by
SMSC staff chiropractors who work in the SMSC Wellness Center. SMSC nutritionists will provide
nutrition counseling. Mdewakanton Emergency Services will check blood pressures. Nurses in the
Shakopee Dakota Clinic will test for glucose (blood sugar) levels, and total cholesterol. DSF Personal
Trainers will test body composition (body fat).
Healthy snacks and bottled water will be given away as well as information on health issues. Free
massages will also be available. The staff at DSF are also inviting the public for free tours of the
facility, which is undergoing construction to add a second ice arena to better serve the community, as
well as of the new SMSC Wellness Center which contains the newly opened Physical Therapy and
Chiropractic Clinic.
