Playworks Summer Camp is a fun program filled with a variety of activities to stimulate children’s interests and get them moving, like outdoor games; arts and crafts; cooking; guest entertainers; computer learning and games; and science and nature activities. There are exciting field trips to beaches, pools, parks, museums, amusement parks, historic locations, and other area attractions. Community service projects will instill in children the importance of helping others. Ice skating, rock climbing, swimming, and playing in the gym next door at Dakotah! Sport and Fitness will also keep campers active all summer long.
After returning from their field trips, kids can explore their interests with Mini Camps, choosing from such topics as creative writing, cooking, dinosaurs, gardening, party planning, bugs, painting, sports, and more! If they just want to relax, they can choose "Couch Potato Camp” and read a book, play computer games, watch a movie, or have free play. Summer Camp classrooms have fun learning centers like language arts, computers, music and drama, arts and crafts, science and nature, math, and more. Teachers plan fun classroom theme days that could include everything from Crazy Hair Day to Olympic games.
Older children have the opportunity to participate in an ecology project under the direction of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Land and Natural Resources Department. Children conduct a number of experiments including water quality sampling, bug collection, and flow monitoring for several weeks at a Dakota sacred site called Maka Yusota (Boiling Springs) near the reservation. Older children will also be able to package meals for Third World countries with the organization Feed My Starving Children.
